A smoking volcano as birthday gift

Tenerife, the largest of the Canaries islands, has many attractions: beautiful beaches, scenic hikes, surfing, and many more. It’s far more than its image of package holiday destination! We visited Tenerife in 2015, and Ieva went there again this May for her birthday.

Our friends Anne-Caire and Ivan have an amazing project: a yoga and surf eco-resort in the mountains. They bought a little farm and are currently preparing it: so far they installed water, solar panels and repaired the farmhouse. Next will be the installation of yurts on the terraces to welcome visitors.  Their progress can be followed on their page Yoga Wave Tenerife 🙂

One of the highlights of the island is the Teide volcano, the tallest volcano in Europe with 3718m. Last year with César we only got to hike around it (having taken the cable car), because going to the top requires advance reservation.  But this year thanks to Meriem (@meriaztravel) it was all planned. We started hiking up in the afternoon, then reached the refuge, and spent the night there.

We woke up at 4am when it’s still dark, and hiked up to see the splendid sunrise. The shadow of the volcano over the clouds was an unforgettable and mystical view…
